A 1-year-old child and her mother were found safe in North Carolina after being abducted from their home early Tuesday morning, officials said.
Police in Garner, North Carolina, cancelled an Amber Alert for the child after she and her mother were found in Wake Forest, about 30 miles north.
Captain Michael Medlin, Garner Police’s public information officer, said no arrests have been made in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
Mother, child kidnapped at gunpoint; $1M demanded
Medlin said in a statement that officers received a call around 11 p.m. Monday night reporting that three suspects, including two men and one woman, entered the family’s Garner home “displaying firearms and demanding money.”
“When they didn’t get the money, they took the female victim and her 13-month-old daughter,” the statement said.
Multiple local outlets including WRAL and WYFF4 reported that the suspects demanded $1 million from the child’s father. When he did not comply, they restrained him with tape and took the child and mother, the reports said.
Medlin declined to comment further on the circumstances around the alleged kidnapping, citing the ongoing investigation. He said the FBI and North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation have taken over the case.
