How to follow the UK local elections with BBC News

On Thursday 1 May 2025,  elections are being held for 23 councils and six mayors in England.

Here’s how to follow the results and analysis with BBC News:

Thursday 1 May

A BBC One special from 11.10pm to 4am (Friday 2 May)  with Laura Kuenssberg will follow the latest developments, with guests and expert analysis from Professor Sir John Curtice. Chris Mason will be in Runcorn to give audiences a view from the ground, with BBC News correspondents at key counts across the to keep viewers updated. This will also be available live on BBC iPlayer, the BBC News Channel and BBC Sounds via the Live News stream.

BBC News online will follow all the developments in the council and mayoral elections through the night on the website and app. There will be a round-the-clock live page, bringing in the reports from BBC correspondents at all the key counts, as well as a host of analysis and explainers on what the results mean from our correspondents and reporters across the country, as well as from Professor Sir John Curtice.

People will be able to see the results in their area as they come in through the night and day with the easy-to-use postcode lookup tool. There is also the Local Elections 2025 page, which is being continually updated with simple explainers and detailed analysis from our political correspondents and editors.

Friday 2 May

BBC Breakfast will have a comprehensive results and reaction service from 6am. Audiences can follow live the latest from the Runcorn and Helsby by-election reaction, as well as from Mayoral and Council election results that have already been declared. Representatives from Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Reform UK and the Greens will all appear on the show from 6am.

The Today Programme will be covering the latest election news with results and interviews as part of their Friday morning programme on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

There will be ongoing TV and audio coverage and analysis the following day with Laura Kuenssberg who will be guiding viewers through the results alongside Reeta Chakrabarti, who will be crunching the numbers on the giant graphics screen. This starts on BBC Two at 12pm until 2pm, before switching to BBC One from 2pm to 4pm, and then continuing on the BBC News Channel from 4pm to 5pm, as well as being on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds. The News Channel will feature regular reports throughout the day.

There will be ongoing reporting on BBC News online website and app with the live page and all the latest developments and analysis.

Newscast will record an episode of the podcast at 7am on Friday morning, hosted by Adam Fleming and Chris Mason. It will be available live on the BBC Live News stream on BBC Sounds – and available as a podcast soon after. And across the weekend, Laura Kuenssberg and Paddy O’Connell will wrap up the rest of the results with Newscast episodes on Saturday and Sunday.

On BBC Radio 5 Live Laura McGhie will have news from the overnight counts with reaction, guests and analysis throughout the day.

BBC News at Six and Ten will update audiences with the latest election news and provide expert insight from the BBC’s political correspondents.

Newsnight will be bring you smart insights and lively debate on what the results mean for the UK political landscape.

The BBC Local network will have comprehensive coverage of the upcoming local elections. Its dedicated teams will bring audiences the latest updates and in-depth analysis across all platforms, including BBC local radio, the 6.30pm regional evening news, BBC Sounds, and their dedicated online news portal.
