Tesla Model S Plaid Takes On Ferrari SF90 And Porsche 911 Turbo S

Which is fastest, all-electric, hybrid, or pure ICE? The full spectrum of the current automotive performance world has been put on display in several three-car drag races, featuring a few of the quickest production vehicles ever made. The contenders include the Tesla Plaid family sedan, the rather exotic Ferrari SF90 supercar, and the shockingly well-engineered Porsche 911 super sports GT. Sure, there are faster examples of each powertrain type in less-produced vehicles, but this astonishingly close series of races puts some of the more accessible examples of high-performance street cars to the test.

Porsche, Ferrari, Tesla/ICE, Hybrid, BEV

Judging by the specsheet, you would expect either the Tesla to rocket ahead with its instant electric torque, or the Ferrari to eventually catch up and pass the Tesla at the top end. The real surprise in this contest is actually the Porsche, which weighs roughly the same as the Ferrari and certainly makes far less power. And yet it’s a serious contender.

A new electric performance monster just blew past the Tesla Plaid—and it did it more than once. This isn’t just a fluke. It’s a changing of the guard.

What’s really impressive is that all three cars, with a wide range of powertrains and price points, are all within a bus length at the end of a half-mile all-out drag. While it’s something of a platitude, we really do have quite a lot of high-performance options in the world right now. If only we had some affordable high-speed hybrid options to match the lower-cost high-performance ICE cars and depreciated EVs, for those of us without six figures to spend on a fast car.
